I remember Takagi refering to Van Dine relatively often (even going as far as spoiling the The Bishop Murder Case in Noumen Satsujin Jiken), so he's probably the one who influenced Takagi.Ho-Linghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04673330638260132388noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8031063966272508587.post-51229383553700524312012-01-25T23:23:33.620+01:002012-01-25T23:23:33.620+01:00What I found an interesting aspect of this book wa...What I found an interesting aspect of this book was how Takagi adapted (or seems to have adapted) a fairly typical feature from the American detective story to depict a part of Japanese culture, in this case the world of tattoos.

A close examination of a culture, institution or collectors, interspersed between portions of the plot, was something often found in the works of members of the Van Dine-Queen School. Clyde Clason and (from what I understood) Todd Downing were the most notables ones, who draped their stories in cultural backgrounds.

The locked room is a good one, but it would've profited from a diagram that gives the reader immediately a clear picture of how the trick was pulled off.TomCathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03415176301265218101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8031063966272508587.post-32715117305435104322012-01-25T21:45:50.227+01:002012-01-25T21:45:50.227+01:00I remember I had severe troubles getting started i...I remember I had severe troubles getting started in Noumen Satsujin Jiken, because the writing was so dry. With an English translation, I can power through it forcefully, but I can't do that with Japanese texts... I guess that this is Takagi's writing style, but that knowledge certainly doesn't make the idea of having to read Ningyou wa naze korosareru alluring (well, I'll probably have to one day, seeing how it's lauded everywhere...)Ho-Linghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04673330638260132388noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8031063966272508587.post-56929223551374462352012-01-25T21:12:13.241+01:002012-01-25T21:12:13.241+01:00I've been thinking about checking this out in ...I've been thinking about checking this out in English after the revised edition was out of print, but now that I know when I'll be overseas I guess I'll just wait until I can buy it in Japanese.

I began reading 人形はなぜ殺される some months ago but somehow couldn't really get into it. You might have put it quite well with the lack of atmosphere due to pragmatic writing.mousoukyokuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00755066580829504834noreply@blogger.com
