Note that this probably also has to do with the fact detective fiction in general is a very popular genre in Japan, and you often come across references to the Giants in contemporary books, which in return creates new demand. I think I've seen these names in every, reasonably sized bookstore.

(And from a darker POV, it probably also has a lot to do with the way bookstores work in Japan: I am pretty sure that a lot of power lies with the major publishing houses, so I think a lot of publishers, like Tokyo Sogen (best known for translated mystery novels) have a lot of influence on the assortment of the shops.)Ho-Linghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04673330638260132388noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8031063966272508587.post-21617354068818816192014-03-21T04:12:17.611+01:002014-03-21T04:12:17.611+01:00How popular in Japan is Carr? If they have gotten all the way down to translating even a comparatively minor short story collection like this one, then he is probably pretty popular.

The story "The Third Bullet," by the way, has two different versions. The version usually seen, and reprinted in the American collection of that name, was in fact severely abridged by Ellery Queen for American publication in his magazine prior to issuance of the collection. The deletions may be why you did not like it. If you ever get the chance, you might want to read the longer and more complex version which may only be available in the book "Fell and Foul Play" edited by Douglas G. Greene.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
