Nekosogi, on the other hand, was written when Nisio was already deep into JoJo / Medaka Box-land, and is generally speaking not that good. The spin-offs are, in my humble opinion, a cash-in on the series' success.C. I haven't read the latter books yet (and nothing at all of the spin-off/related novels), so I can only guess as to how the series will further develop from this point. I don't need a murder per se to enjoy a mystery, but I think I'll have to find out for myself to see to what extent later volumes are still mystery(-esque) novels.Ho-Linghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04673330638260132388noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8031063966272508587.post-6548205391891820942015-01-29T23:59:13.092+01:002015-01-29T23:59:13.092+01:00About latter books having no mystery element... it...About latter books having no mystery element... it really depends on how narrowly and orthodoxly you define 'mystery'. If you take it to only mean 'a body is found, detective investigates and reveals some kind of neat trick as to how the death happened' yeah, there is very little of that later in the series.
If you mean it in the 'crazy shit happens, narrator has no idea what's going on but figures it out with reasoning and intellect' then there is plenty of that. In fact, the only actual detective character in the whole series appears in Hitokui, and it also happens to be one of the best detective characters I've encountered in general... very much worth a read.C. Not that I expect them to suddenly start again with the Zaregoto books now, but it's not a /completely/ hopeless situation, especially as NiSiOiSiN has been doing quite well with the Monogatari series and Medaka Box.

The Zaregoto art (cover + illustrations) are made by Take. I actually thought that Take also did the art for the Monogatari series, but I now see that that's VOFAN.Ho-Linghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04673330638260132388noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8031063966272508587.post-18454291074966224072015-01-29T00:58:15.809+01:002015-01-29T00:58:15.809+01:00Ballantine Books, back when they were still in the...Ballantine Books, back when they were still in the Japanese translation business, translated the first two volumes of the Zaregoto series, and after that the series was dropped. That is too bad, because it sounds from your review like they have something to offer. I really like those take covers; they remind me of VOFAN's work.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
